Happy relationships do not depend on resolving all arguments.

It is important to resolve conflicts when you can, but some disagreements are rooted in fundamental differences in lifestyle, personality, or values. Some couples find themselves arguing over the same issues year in and year out, which really harms their relationship. Rather than wasting time trying to change your partner’s mind or convince them that you are right, try to understand the underlying difference that is causing the conflict and learn how to live with it by honoring and respecting each other.

Take a mini-vacation together.

It’s easy to start feeling like you’re too busy or too strapped for cash to take a vacation, but breaking away from your routine, even just for a short period, is really good for your relationship and your overall health.

The key is to get the dates down on your calendar first, then decide what fits your budget and your style. Whether you decide to go zip-lining for an afternoon, visit friends out of town, or spend the night relaxing at a B&B, you will feel like it’s just what the doctor ordered!

A work in progress.

In life and love we don’t achieve success, we cultivate it. Once we have it, there is still work to be done. Seth Godin, a successful entrepreneur, author, and public speaker, blogged something recently that really resonated with me. He said:

“Great projects, like great careers and relationships that last, are gardens. They are tended, they shift, they grow. They endure over time, gaining a personality and reflecting their environment. When something dies or fades away, we prune, replant and grow again.

Perfection and polish aren’t nearly as important as good light, good drainage and a passionate gardener.

By all means, build. But don’t finish. Don’t walk away.

Here we grow.”

Sleep on it.

A common piece of advice that you may have heard is don’t go to bed angry. While it’s usually a good idea to confront problems head-on, sometimes we need a little time to process. Research conducted at the University of California, San Diego, found that people often solve ongoing problems during REM. “When people sleep, the brain reshuffles memories, combining old associations and new ideas to come up with solutions,” says study author Sara Mednick, Ph.D.

So sleeping on our problems may sometimes be more productive than trying to hash things out right before bed when we’re tired. Just make sure that you don’t use this as an excuse to completely avoid problems.
